Stephen Bonatakis, 79, of East Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on August 24, 2026. Born on February 12, 1947, Steve was raised in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and spent his life deeply rooted in the community he loved. He eventually settled in East Springfield, raised his family, and forged lifelong friendships.

Steve was the devoted husband of Elizabeth "Liz" Bonatakis, who preceded him in death in 2019. Their marriage was built on love, loyalty, and a steadfast commitment to family.

He is survived by his daughter, Marybeth Bruton, and her husband, Bo Bruton, his granddaughter, Natalie Stephens, of Ridgefield, Washington; his son, Rob Bonatakis, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Mann Bonatakis, and his grandsons, Jack and Ryan Bonatakis of Milton, Georgia. Nothing brought Steve greater joy than his family, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with them and celebrate their accomplishments.

A proud tradesman, Steve was a longtime member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 104, where he built a respected career and formed many lasting friendships. He took great pride in his work and embodied the values of dedication, integrity, and hard work throughout his life. Steve was a passionate sports fan and loyally followed the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and New England Patriots, and remained a devoted supporter of his beloved Montreal Canadiens. Whether discussing the latest game, reliving memorable seasons or sports history, he was always eager for a spirited conversation.

Beyond sports, Steve loved reading and especially, gathering with friends to watch golf, talk about politics, current events, and whatever else was on their minds. His home was often filled with laughter, storytelling, and friendly debate. He especially treasured the friendships he maintained over the years with the Old Donnie's Cafe crew, a group that remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Steve will be remembered as a loyal husband, a proud father and grandfather, a trusted friend, and a man whose warmth, and steadfast character left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His family and friends will deeply miss his presence, but they will carry forward the memories, values, and love that he shared so generously.

Visitation with his family will be held on Tuesday September 1, 2026, at the Agawam Funeral Home 184 Main Street beginning at 4 P.M. concluding at 6 P.M. Family and friends will gather on Wednesday September 2,2026 at the funeral home beginning at 11 A.M. for a service honoring Steve. Private burial will be held at the convenience of his family.
