Roger A. Slate
November 11, 1947 – November 6, 2024
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Roger A. Slate, who left us quietly on November 6, 2024, just a day after celebrating his 83rd birthday. Born on November 5, 1941, in Springfield, MA, to Harry and Helene Slate, Roger was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother who led an extraordinary and vibrant life.
Roger was known as a successful entrepreneur throughout Western Mass and in his hometown of Agawam. Having left school in the 9th grade, he started out on his own selling things door to door, then opened a beloved toy store, and a chain of local discount stores, Building 451, with his wife Carol. He went on to become the founder and CEO of All For A Dollar, a chain of more than 150 stores he took public.
There were many other ventures along the way, but his greatest success was in helping anyone who asked. Roger gave of his time and resources to help countless people achieve their own goals, forward their careers, and get into business for themselves. He gave his all to everyone and was happy to do it.
Outside of work and helping others, he loved skiing and attending his family's sporting events. He indulged in buying fancy cars and eating at his favorite steakhouses but was also known to enjoy a Jif peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Roger is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol, and their children and spouses: Cynthia and Walter Olechny, Michael and Leslie Slate, and Steven Slate and Gregory Turner. He is also survived by his siblings: Ralph Slate, Gary Slate, Gail Stone, Judy McKay, and his cherished grandchildren: Rachel, Stephanie, Sabrina, Michael, and Matthew. He is also survived by many beloved extended family and friends, including especially his brother-in-law and lifelong business partner Richard Crowley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Helene Slate, and his siblings: Robert, Ames, Linda, Peter, and his grandson Timothy, who spent much cherished time with him in his final years.
