Obituary

Robert M. Vandal died on March 12, 2024, at the age of ninety-four at his residence in the love and comfort of his family. He was born in Woonsocket, R.I. on August 24, 1929, and was the eldest son of deceased parents, Lionel, and Yvonne (Hebert) Vandal. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Audrey (Chase) Vandal. He was a resident of West Springfield for over 69 years.

Mr. Vandal leaves two children, Susan M. Vandal and partner John Hapner of the Villages, FL; Steven L. and his wife Susan (LaViolette) Vandal of Agawam, MA; two brothers Donald Vandal and wife Panjai of Texas; Leonard Vandal and wife Maryann of Michigan; a grandson, Steven R. Vandal, and great granddaughter, Haley Vandal both of Texas, and nieces and nephews.

Bob graduated from Northbridge High School in 1948, entered the US Air Force and served from December 1951 to December 1955. He was a drafting major at Western New England College, after leaving the service, he worked for Hamilton Standard and was involved with the Space Systems for the land rover and the backpacks the astronauts wore on the moon. Rober retired from Kidder Stacey of Agawam after its closing in 1993.

Mr. Vandal enjoyed photography, golf, hockey, football and doing daily crossword puzzles. He was an active member of the WS Elks Lodge until its closing and was honored to be selected French Elk of the Year and also Elk of the Year.

Bob had a great sense of humor, a bright smile, he was a king and compassionate man, and when asked his secret to a long life, he replied "Have a pure heart, I wasn't always perfect, but my heart was always loving".

Family and friends will gather at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18,2024 at the Agawam Funeral Home 184 Main St. Agawam to form a procession to the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam for a 11:00 a.m. committal service with full military honors.
