March 27, 2025
Philip C. McCarthy
(1938 – 2025)
After a hard-fought illness and with the same spirit as his "Fighting Irish" of Notre Dame, Phil passed away on March 27th at his longtime home in Agawam, MA.
He was born in Springfield and was the son of Paul & Anne (Mickus) McCarthy. Phil grew up in West Springfield where he attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Cathedral High School, Class of 1956.
In his earlier years, Phil worked on the railroad at Union Station in downtown Springfield and served in the National Guard. He then went on to work for Premoid Paper Company where he also served as the Union President for many years.
Phil was well known to be a great storyteller and an avid reader. He had a fondness for horses and one of his favorite places to visit was the Saratoga Racecourse in N.Y.
His grandchildren were his pride and joy and brought so much happiness into his life. The time they spent on vacations at the Cape and Christmas Eve celebrations at Grandpa's were some of the most memorable times.
Phil was predeceased by his cherished daughter, Christine, whom he will now be joyously reunited.
He leaves his loving daughter, Kimberly, who will carry his love within her heart for always; his son-in-law, Alan Bobecki, who was a true confidant and caregiver to Phil during his final days; his son-in-law, Frank Morassi, who always took care of Phil's numerous household projects throughout the years.
Phil also leaves his beloved brother, Paul McCarthy and his wife Diane of Vero Beach, Florida; his niece Jennifer; nephew Kevin – both of whom meant so very much to him.
He also left his four grandchildren; Brie (Bobecki) Hagenow, who he treasured with all his heart; Daniel Bobecki, Samuel Morassi and Joseph Morassi, whom he loved and admired.
A special thank you to the caring and compassionate caregivers at Baystate Hospice, especially Scott & Liz, who took such wonderful care of him in his final days.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 9:30 – 11:00 am at the Agawam Funeral Home, 184 Main Street, Agawam. Followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at 12 pm in St. John the Evangelist Church, 833 Main Street, Agawam, MA. Committal will follow at the Agawam Center Cemetery.
