John Vooris, a decorated Air Force veteran, and a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, left us on November 5, 2024. Born on October 22, 1933, in Northport, NY, John moved to Hampton Manor, NY in 1948 where he graduated from Columbia High School in 1951. A strong athlete, he played football and baseball, and he carried his love for sports throughout his life, becoming an avid bowler. After high school, he worked at Vooris Construction before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force on February 15, 1952, where he would serve with distinction for over two decades.
John's military career took him far and wide. From basic training and military police training in 1952, to Orly Field France from 1952 to 1955, ENT AFB Colorado from 1955 to 1956, and Hanscom Field Massachusetts from 1956 to 1962. His service was marked by a series of commendations and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 oak clusters, the Vietnam Service Medal, among many others. Following his retirement from the Air Force on March 31, 1974, John found a second career at the U.S. Post Office, dedicating his work ethic and commitment to service to his local community of Springfield, Massachusetts.
John's life was also marked by a deep love for his family. He married Alice (Seferian) Vooris on February 1, 1959, with whom he had three children: David, Doreen, and Darlene. He delighted in his role as a grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather leaving behind a legacy of love and strength for his seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter. He is survived by his daughter, Doreen LaValley, and her husband Jay and his daughter Darlene Vooris-Lape. He was preceded in death by his wife Alice, his son David, and his parents Herbert and Helen Vooris.
Services for John will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the Agawam Funeral Home, 184 Main Street, Agawam, Massachusetts, 01001. Calling hours will be from 12:00 pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm , and the committal service at 3:00 pm.
