Garry Williams Meyers, 780 Converse Street, Longmeadow, MA passed away October 22, 2024, with his loving daughters at his side. He felt blessed to have had a loving and devoted wife, Jane Alvina (Rieth) Meyers (deceased) for 66 years. He shared proud memories of her child raising and especially loved time with family. They resided in Feeding Hills, MA for 36 years. For several years, he published a monthly newsletter entitled "The Daylily". It left a precious legacy of his grandchildren growing up to adulthood. As a natural story teller, he loved sharing his life stories with family. In 2023 he published a book, 'My Life Stories' recounting his memorable life experiences, which his family will always treasure. He wrote a fully illustrated children's book "Crisis at Frog Pond".
After 20 years of active military service and 10 years in the reserves, Garry retired from the Navy as a Master Chief (E9). He was responsible for the maintenance of the planes on the aircraft carriers such as the Intrepid, Forrestal, Coral Sea, Oriskany, Philippine Sea and the Randolph. He was a plank owner on the Forrestal, which was the first supercarrier commissioned in 1955. He served as an anti-submarine aircrewman and flew many ASW Missions from the Randolph and Intrepid. While on the Intrepid he was part of the recovery of the space capsule Gemini 3. He enjoyed the Navy life exploring the world and his time at sea. His final role was Maintenance Chief for a P3 Orion Aircraft Squadron.
Following his military career, he was hired by Hamilton Standard to use his aviation skills to instruct airline personnel on the Hamilton Standard equipment on the new Boeing 747 aircraft. He specialized as a fuel control Service Engineer and established a fuel control overhaul facility for fighter jets at Kelly Air Force Base. He completed 23 years at Hamilton Standard.
He was awarded the Obama Service Award for over 25 years and 4000+ service hours as a dedicated volunteer at Baystate Medical Center. He had a single engine land pilot's license. He was an avid runner who ran many 5k, 10K and a half marathon. His average speed was a 10-minute mile. Gardening, puzzles, daily jumbles and writing were a part of his daily life. Jane, his wife, loved the flowers he grew for her.
He was born in Manhattan, New York on February 26, 1930. Shortly after he was adopted by Francis and Elizabeth Meyers of Gloversville, NY. Garry leaves behind his wife, Jane (Rieth) Meyers (deceased), his brother, Leo Meyers and his wife Theresa Meyers (both deceased) of South Glens Falls, NY. His brother in law, Gerald Rieth and his wife Mary Ann Rieth (both deceased) of Guilderland, NY. His sister in law, Barbara Rieth of Gloversville, NY.
He is survived by five daughters; Bridget Heller husband Laurence of Wilbraham, MA; Mary Lane husband Albert(deceased) of Gallatin, TN; Kathi Pickett husband David of Feeding Hills, MA; Brenda Beaudoin husband Lou of Palmer, MA and Aileen Dacyczyn husband Walter of South Deerfield, MA. He was an admired grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. They all enjoyed listening to grandpa's stories.
His family will receive friends on Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 2 to 4 pm at the Agawam Funeral Home, 184 Main Street Agawam. His funeral service will begin at 11 am on Monday, October 28, 2024 at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 30 Bartlett Street, Westfield, MA. Graveside services will be at Ferndale Cemetery, 545 North Perry Street, Johnstown, NY on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 11:30 am.Donations may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation at T2T.ORG
