Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and deep respect that we announce the passing of our beloved Evangeline Mathieu, who left this world on December 18, 2024, peacefully after a short, courageous battle with cancer with her loving daughter and son-in-law by her side. Born on July 10, 1942, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Evangeline moved to Canada at the tender age of three, where she lived until she was fourteen before settling in Beecher Falls, Vermont. At just sixteen, she met the love of her life, the late Herve Mathieu, at the Ethan Allen Factory. Their beautiful love story culminated in marriage on July 16, 1960, in St. Edwidge, Quebec, Canada. Evangeline was a steadfast beacon of strength, embodying loyalty and love in every aspect of her life.

In 1965, Evangeline and Herve began a new chapter together in Springfield, where they purchased their first home. In 1977, they moved to Agawam, Massachusetts, which became her cherished home for 47 wonderful years. Throughout her life, Evangeline was a woman of many gifts, known for her exceptional cooking and deep compassion for others. She took great joy in tending to her garden, going for long walks, and creating cherished memories at the beach, especially at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Her commitment to her community was evident through her involvement with the Filles Isabelle and her active membership at St. John the Evangelist Church.

Evangeline leaves behind her devoted daughter, Marlene, and son-in-law Francis Mathieu, her son, Ghislain Mathieu. She is also survived by her beloved siblings: Marcienne Brousseau, Celine Chaloux, Leopold (Teressa) Tetreault, Martial (Diane) Tetreault, Megella Tetreault, Gaston Tetreault, Bernadette Pomerleau, Lucie (Henry) Prehemo, Jacinthe (Gaston) Cournoyer, and Bibiane Lanctot. She will be remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Evangeline was preceded in death by her parents, Donat and Marie-Ange Tetreault, her cherished husband, Herve Mathieu, her sister, Hermance Lemieux, and her brother, Gatien Tetreault.
