Obituary

Carlo J. Imelio
August 4, 1936 – October 28, 2024

Carlo Joseph Imelio, 88, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024. Carlo was born in North Agawam on August 4, 1936, and raised by the late Felix Imelio and Rose Lovotti.

The best moment of his life was at a friend's wedding, where he met and immediately fell in love with his future wife of 66 years, Edna "Midge" Newman, who passed away earlier this year. After graduating from Agawam High in 1954, he entered the Navy where he served on the USS Maury for 2 years. Carlo and Midge married shortly thereafter and raised 2 children, Nicholas and Joanne, on the land behind his childhood home in a house built by his father. Dad's hobbies included tennis, golf, and woodworking. In recent years, he looked forward to his weekly outings with his buddies at "the track."

In 1966, he began his career at the Springfield Newspapers in the Sports Department and quickly moved his way up to become one of the most talented and respected sportswriters in the business. He was a favorite among players and coaches and made many friends along the way. His popularity grew immensely when the "I Beat Carlo" contest began in 1981. By 1999, more than 1 million entries had been submitted, every one of which Midge scored by hand. In addition to being the beat writer for the Patriots for 30 years, he reported on many legendary sporting events, sitting ringside at Ali/Frazier 1. A respected boxing aficionado, he was active in local Golden Gloves for many years.

Carlo and Midge created a loving, nurturing home, instilling in their children values of love, hard work, dedication, and loyalty. A hometown boy made good, he valued equally his childhood friends and those in the world of sports, media, and entertainment. He often included his children in his work life, introducing them to people and experiences beyond what "normal" Dads could. He was an inspiring example of reinvention, perseverance, and second chances. He was a very funny man who entertained all with his storytelling, and boy, did he have a lot of stories! He will be dearly missed.

Carlo leaves his son, Nicholas Imelio of Brooklyn, Nick's Goddaughters Keeley and Teagan Parish of Brooklyn, his daughter Joanne O'Donoghue and husband John. He also leaves his Goddaughter, Paula Winter, who helped care for him during his final days. He also leaves Kelli McGrath, Kristi Galin, Wendy Kinney, Cathy Benner, Bill Whitney, Caleigh and Connor Galin and Carleigh McGrath. Carlo is also survived by his best friend of 85 years, Dick Pisano, as well as Bobby DeGeorge, Peter Mutti, Don Conkey, the Reid family, many members of his golf group which recently celebrated the 31st annual Western Mass Invitational, and countless others. Carlo was predeceased by his brothers Joseph and Peter and sister Anita.
