November 1, 1948 – February 26, 2026
Alice Ann Angelo, M.D., of Agawam, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026. She was 77 years old.
Alice was born November 1, 1948 to Mary Ann Herrick Angelo and Walter Lewis Angelo Jr. in Cheverly, Maryland. Mary raised Alice and older sister Winifred in New Castle, Delaware where Alice attended St. Peter's Catholic School from first grade through graduation in 1966. Alice went on to attend the University of Delaware, majoring in Organic Chemistry before studying medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College At Thomas Jefferson University (1974).
Dr. Angelo dedicated her life to the practice of medicine with intelligence, precision, and compassion. She completed her internship at Hartford Hospital in 1975 and did her residency in Internal Medicine there finishing in 1978. Board certified in Internal Medicine in 1978 and in Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1981, she pursued advanced fellowship training at Baystate Medical Center from 1978 to 1980. Over the course of her distinguished career in private practice and at Baystate, she specialized in the treatment of pregnant women with diabetes, taking extraordinary care to guide her patients through complex medical journeys with patience and clarity. Her vast medical knowledge and kindness turned many patients into friends over the years. Known for taking the time to explain every detail until it was fully understood, she earned the deep trust of generations of patients and colleagues. In recognition of her leadership and dedication, she served with distinction as the 10th President of the Baystate Medical Staff, concluding her term in 1997.
After mother Mary Angelo's death in the spring of 1996, Alice married the love of her life, Andy Keir on September 27, 1996. They shared years of companionship before and after their wedding until his passing on August 1, 2014.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Alice embraced life with enthusiasm and particular tastes all her own. She loved the ocean and found joy in time spent on Cape Cod, and in Vinalhaven, Maine. She enjoyed skiing, golfing, traveling, shopping, and dining out—especially when lobster or any form of chocolate was on the menu. Alice and Andy were regulars at many restaurants around Agawam often gathering with old friends and collecting new ones along the way. Alice delighted in children's books and took great pleasure in sharing them with the children in her life, especially her niece and nephew and step-grandchildren. Above all, she was generous with her time, her knowledge, and her love.
Alice was a two-time breast cancer survivor. She fought this disease with her characteristic strength and determination. Exemplifying the fierce resilience and fullness of life she had often encouraged in her patients. Her faith, intellect, and wit remained strong, but her body bore the consequences of the fight, impacting her life in later years.
Alice is survived by her sister Winifred Angelo Shaffer of North St. Paul, MN, her stepsister, Denise Angelo of Lehi, UT, her niece Susan Cowan of Göttingen, Germany, and her nephew Michael Shaffer of Fullerton, CA, as well as many extended family members, colleagues, and patients whose lives were better because of her care and presence.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, at the Agawam Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. and funeral service at 10:30 a.m. A procession to the cemetery will follow, with interment at 11:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather for lunch after.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in her honor.
Alice will be remembered for her keen mind, her steadfast dedication to her patients, her love of the ocean, and the many small, thoughtful traditions that brought sweetness to those around her. Her legacy of faith, care, intelligence, and generosity endures.
